May have no symptoms; often feels "heavy", with a bulge. Rx: elective surgery problem if intestine gets stuck and hernia can not be reduced, rx: urgent surgery; bigger problem if intestine twists on self and cuts off blood supply, rx: emergency surgery. No surgery?-truss.

It : It is very common to have hernias on both sides.  It sounds like he will need to have this repaired surgically.  As long as it is not causing him pain or causing him symptoms of GI obstruction such as nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain, he will not need to have the surgery done as an emergency.  It is unfortunate that he did not have a good experience with his previous surgery.  I think he should check around and find a surgeon with whom he feels comfortable with.  You might ask his personal physician or your friends for a name.  Confidence is everything for him.  He needs to express his fears and concerns. The hernia surgery can then be done as in an outpatient setting, which is usually calmer, on a day that fits his schedule better.  Best wishes.

This pathway constricts down in most, but surrounds the testicular blood supply that comes from near the kidneys. It is a weakness that women do not have since ovaries don't make that trip.

Larger opening.: While both Men and Women have inguinal canals, males tend to have slightly larger openings due to the fact that the testicles descend through this canal and into the scrotum during developement. The opening may not close completely or remain weak. Women have a large ligament that runs through the canal and holds their uterus, so abdominal organs etc, cannot pass.

Lifetime risk is 25%: Inguinal hernias are more common in men than women, due to the descent of the testicles from inside the abdomen to the scrotum.  A bulge in the area on either side of your pubic bone is a typical physical finding, while burning or aching sensation at the bulge, especially when bending over, coughing or lifting is a common symptom.  See your physician for confirmation by examination
