what is the definition or description of: mellaril allergy?

Mellaril Allergy: Thioridazine (Mellaril) is a piperidine antipsychotic drug  which was used for treatment of  schizophrenia and psychosis. In 2005 Mellaril was withdrawn due to cardiac arrhythmias. Allergic reactions could include swelling of tongue, throat, lips, mouth, hives or difficulty breathing.

Antipsychotic: Mellaril is an older antipsychotic agent, used to help people with hallucinations, delusions, etc.  Smaller doses can also be used for very severe anxiety and sleeplessness.   It can cause a lot of dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating, and dizziness when standing up though.

is mellaril all right to use for my  anxiety instead of chlorpromazine?

It depends: It depends on what kind of anxiety you have, and what your doctor has prescribed for you.  Both Mellaril and Chlorpromazine are older antipsychotic medications which often have sedating effects as well.   Psychotic anxiety can certainly respond to these medications, but if you have a non-psychotic disorder there may be better medicines for you.  Please discuss with your psychiatrist.

can you please tell me how safe is the nardil, (phenelzine) mellaril, and norpramin medication?

Somewhat depends: All three have been used for more than 40 years.  Nardil needs to be taken in context of care diet modification, but it works quite well.  Mellaril is an antipsychotic used for years and years, until eli lilly got scared of Geodon (ziprasidone) and forced the fda to study other antipsychotics for qtc changes.  Again, quite safe.  Norpramin is despiramine, one of the first antidepressants; again, used for years.

Antipsychotic: Thioridazine is an older ("first-generation") antipsychotic medication, used primarily for the treatment of schizophrenia and related psychotic illness. Because of dangerous cardiac side effects and drug-drug interactions associated with thioridazine, it is not considered a "first line" treatment, as there are many newer and safer antipsychotic medications available.

are there extrapyramidal symptoms occur with thorazine, haldol, (haloperidol) mellaril, or cardiazem?

Some: Yes for the first 3 which are 1st generation antipsychotic meds.  I've not heard of it or suspect for cardiazem (diltiazem) which is a heart med. Extrapyramidal sx (eps) include: tremors, stiffness, restlessness.  They can be managed by dosage reduction, change in med or by giving meds that counter such as cogentin, propranolol, amantadine and sometime ativan.

Yes: Yes, all of these medications can potentially cause eps. The first 3 are much more likely than the 4th due to mechanism of action.

Subtle: hives can occur as part of an allergy syndrome.  people with chronic hives or who have an inborn low threshold for hives have difficulty differentiating simple hives from drug allergy.  If the drug reaction is IgE-mediated, or occurs via a similar pathway without IgE, then one would expect additional symptoms other than hives (breathing problem, dizzy, nausea, swelling, headache, etc)

What is the context: Depends on what you are looking for. No simple test. There are specific tests for certain things (penicillin).  There are a few tests done to determine if an individual can tolerate a certain med (G6PD). Mostly, though, it comes down to trial of a med and knowledge  of what to look for. For example if you get a cough with ACE inhib (lisinopril) your DR will change you to ARB (valsartan)

can my unborn child be harmed if i have a drug allergy?

No: Having a drug allergy is only a problem if you are exposed to the  drug. If there is a severe drug allergy during pregnancy there is a potential for a problem. Avoid the drug to which you are allergic.
