Fibromyalgia impact: Impact of symptoms is the best measure of disease severity. Dr. Robert bennett published the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (fiqr) that makes it easy for patients to find out. There is a "fibromyalgia" app that makes using and scoring fiqr easy.  Based on your fiqr score, you will know how you compare to other patients. This will give you a good idea whether you have fibromyalgia.

Yes: Physical therapy is absolutely a useful tool for managing pain, given that you are cleared for it by a physician knowing the extent of your spine problems.  I would discuss your hesitance to take medications to your doctor, and if they won't respect your perspective, get a second opinion.  That said, many pain medications can be used safely without fear of addiction.

No: The most recently approved medications approved for fibromyalgia are Savella, (milnacipran) Cymbalta and Lyrica.  These have been around at least 5 years.

There are several: One should avoid the use of narcotic analgesics in the treatment of fm pain. Commonly used medications include nsaid's, tylenol, (acetaminophen) and tramadol.  Cymbalta is useful in some patients as is savella. Treatment must be individualized as no single medication is uniformly effective in all patients.  As noted the use of medications such as hydrocodone should be avoided as habituation is a real concern.

Talk to doc.: It is best to speak to the prescribing physician! Lyrica (pregabalin) is often begun at 75 mg twice daily for fibromyalgia. Effexor is often titrated, at least the xr formulation, beginning at 37.5 for one week, then 75mg for one week before further titration depending on the target dose.

Fibromyalgia: is a difficult condition to diagnose because it can mimic all kinds of diseases that cause chronic pain. It is often associated with depression, insomnia and flu-like symptoms. Mild to moderate exercise will help, practice sleep hygiene, avoid narcotics. These meds could be helpful: Cymbalta ,Lyrica (pregabalin) and Savelle. Ask your doctor for recommendation.

Be sure of diagnosis: Find a Rheumatologist that specializes in fibromyalgia. Not knowing what you have already tried, it is difficult to say what else to try. Pain medications are not the answer. A combination of anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, an exercise program, and the use of swimming and hot tub are all helpful. They must be used as a combined program. Magnesium,vit D3,B complex should be taken regularly.

Psychotherapy: Can help cope with the challenges fibromyalgia doles out including pain and stress management. Support groups if available also are helpful. Many people do not understand or want to hear about it, so finding others who understand and can be supportive is important.
