Holosynch: Multiple meditation programs like holosynch are available.  Most seem to use what they call "binaural beat" technology, said to entrain brainwaves -- which supposedly leads to more calm and awareness in your thinking. They say they allow you to meditate "better" in less time. These are of varying prices and complexity.  Holosynch is possibly the most expensive.  Others: lifeflow, clear-mind, etc.

Very helpful: Mbsr and meditation provide opportunity for us to be aware of inner experience, on purpose, and non-judgmentally.  Being disconnected from ourselves can lead to stress, depression, and anxiety. A seminal book on this topic is &quot;full catastrophe living&quot; by jon kabat-zinn phd, who founded mbsr in the us over 30 years ago. Updated 2013 version describes the program ; contains new research!

There are positive data for meditation for  many conditions, including psoriasis, anxiety, depression, hypertension, angina, and other kinds of physical pain. Meditation: Meditation has been very important in my personal life -- and i've been practicing it since learning some basics in college.  I have especially used mindfulness meditation since around 1990, with formal training a few years later.  When i practice regularly my ability to focus improves, and i can deal with the day's events much more calmly.  These effects continue beyond my actual meditation time.

No: I have never heard of any harmful effects of meditation, while a large body of research has demonstrated a wide range of benefits for physical and mental health.  However, I have observed that if you meditate for too long seated in a lotus or semi-lotus position it can cause some temporary knee discomfort!

Meditations are thought process of the mind to bring about a relaxation response and deep thought.  Usually quiet contemplation of the breathing or chanting of a mantra.  The purpose is to achieve inner peace and tranquility.

Combine with coping: Choosing a style you are willing to do, practice daily, employ ongoing adjustment to improve effect, & enjoy the process, especially with other people. Meditation should help clear the mind & relax the body to be open to think more clearly & make decisions about life.

Vipassana: There are many good vipassana teachers, and you could attend one of their retreats to begin with.  I suggest a day or weekend-long one to start with, because some last much longer.
