Bleeding/Obstruction: Tumor in the ureter can cause obstruction  of urine flow what will lead to pain. Bleeding in the urine is a common finding.Pain can be located anywhere in the abdomen or even in the back. A CT scan of the abdomen can easily detect the abnormality in the kidney or even in the ureter if the tumor growth is more advanced.

Tell us more: How did they find the suspected node? By scan ? Please tell us your age, ct or pet scans findings. Consult with your dr about the need for biopsy for confirmation of recurrence? Need work up: Need work up for obstruction at ureter , yes stone and tumor can cause, but more often a benign vascular band rather than cancer  is the cause , before you worry you need more work up . Direct visualization and by passing obstruction with a a stent catheter ( double j ) most likely will be one, speak to your doctor.

my 88 year old mother has cancer of the ureter, surrounding lymph nodes affected as well. she has chosen not to treat. what can we expect?

The ureter: Is the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder.  She has two of each.  If she refuses treatment and understands that the tumor first grows, bleeds, blocks kidney, goes to those node, but later may cause pain and metastasis (travel) to other organs.  However, the other kidney will continue to function if it is already in good shape. Elderly people have different objectives. Take time to listen.

Probably normal: Quite common to see flecks of tissue in nephrostomy tube  urine.  Sorry your Mum is having chemo for breast cancer.  If she is making normal amount of urine she should be ok.  If she can,  drink plenty of liquids.
