Many: There are many medicines for anxiety and panic disorder.  All the ssri antidepressants such as celexa, prozac, lexapro, zoloft, etc can be helpful.  Also snri's like Effexor and pristiq (desvenlafaxine).  These generally take a few weeks to work, and doses can be gradually titrated to effectiveness.  Benzodiazepines like klonipin and ativan, but these can be habit forming.  Buspar & propanolol can be used too.

SSRI/ SSNRI / BZD: The selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (ssri) are probably the most effective and safest followed by the selective serotonin and norepineprine re-uptake inhibitors (ssnri) followed by the benzodiazepines (bzd).  There are many medications within each class which are often chosen based upon side effect profile.

Take your medicine!: We live in a time where there are thousands of fda-approved, safe & effective medications that you can take advantage of and benefit from fully to the extent that you have a better quality of life. We wouldn't go to all of this trouble to investigate and prescribe unless we had confidence in medications. Work through your hesitation and commit to taking a medication for your panic. You'll be glad.

Not common choices: For Panic Disorder, those medications are not usually prescribed. They are for major depression and gastric acid problems respectively in most cases. Drugs are used 'off label' more and more, so this may be a new choice. Do take the opportunity to clarify w/ the Dr who prescribed. Don't simply ignore it and don't start it until you understand why, what to expect, etc. Take care, be well!

Both : Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) belong to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. They can both be used to treat panic disorder and both have similar side effects. Most important side effects are those affecting central nervous system: drowsiness, daytime sedation, memory impairment, physical and psychological dependence, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Different people respond differently to these drugs, something that depends on a person's age, general health (in particular presence of liver disease) and concurrent use of other drugs. Your doctor's decision to prescribe Ativan is most likely based on factoring these and other aspects of your general health into this decision. There is no downside of asking your doctor about xanax vs. Ativan for treatment of your panic disorder.
