SSRI/ SSNRI / BZD: The selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (ssri) are probably the most effective and safest followed by the selective serotonin and norepineprine re-uptake inhibitors (ssnri) followed by the benzodiazepines (bzd). There are many medications within each class which are often chosen based upon side effect profile.

Anxiety: Benzodiazepines like Ativan & xanax & klonopin, ssri's like Prozac & zoloft, snri's like Effexor (venlafaxine) & cymbalta, and seizure medications like Gabitril & trileptal.

GAD: Agree that ssri's & snri's are effective, but take a while to kick in (weeks) & are less effective by themselves initially for treating panic attacks or severe anxiety once the attack ensues.
