Both : Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) belong to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. They can both be used to treat panic disorder and both have similar side effects. Most important side effects are those affecting central nervous system: drowsiness, daytime sedation, memory impairment, physical and psychological dependence, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. Different people respond differently to these drugs, something that depends on a person's age, general health (in particular presence of liver disease) and concurrent use of other drugs. Your doctor's decision to prescribe Ativan is most likely based on factoring these and other aspects of your general health into this decision. There is no downside of asking your doctor about xanax vs. Ativan for treatment of your panic disorder.

Dr : Dr baskys provided very good information in his response. There have been a number of deaths attributed to the immediate release form of xanax (alprazolam). This causes concern by many prescribers. There is an extended release form as well. If you are continuing to have break through panic attacks on Ativan and lexapro, you might wish to consider a non-medication adjunct: medical acupuncture. It is a safe, non- intrussive method of dealing with anxiety disorders. Take care.
