Decrease slowly: You should decrease it slowly (maybe decrease to 150mg twice a day first) to see if discontinuing it will make your pain worse.  If you pain starts to come back then you need more time with the medication.

: It can’t be avoided if taken long enough but you can reduce the possibility by having “ drug holidays “. By that if you you stop for 48 hours every two weeks you may prev that occur ring. Good Luck

3600 mg/day: 800 mg four times a day is the upper limit on neurontin (gabapentin). It is my understanding that taking more than 800 mg with any one dose is a waste as there are limits on absorption past 800 mg per dose. Higher doses can result in increased sedation and in sensitive individuals confusion, gait impairment, slurred speech. Most tolerate it well, however. Please discuss your dosing and concerns with you doctor.

Taking 3 times a day is typical, and you can titrate the dose for best results.

Suggestions: Neurontin (gabapentin) or Gabapentin has a relatively short half-life and is best taken 3 times daily, about every 8 hrs.  Maximum effective dose is about a total of 3600 mg daily.  Slow titration done to allow fewer adverse reactions.  Would suggest you first go to 300mg twice daily for 3 or 4 days and then 300 mg every 8 hrs.  Do contact your doctor and get explicit directions as to how to proceed from there.
