No magic number: There's no perfect number. Here a good rule of thumb. Subtract your age from 220. This is your maximum predicted heart rate. Multiple by 60%. This is your recommended target heart rate. Example: age 44.   220-44=176.  0.6x 176=105. 105 is your target.  Remember: you'll lose more weight by reducing your intake than by trying to burn it up. Any exercise at any heart rate is beneficial for dieters.

i am a 69 year old man who has exercised regularly all my life. i have a resting h r of about 45 bpm. i ran yesterday in hot conditions. about 48 minutes max heart rate 135, average 120 bpm. resting h r overnight and since is about 70. feel ok. why?

: I congratulate you on your fondness for exercise. It is well known that hot weather can increase your heart rate abnormally and can put you at risk for heat stroke. This is a well documented effect. My advice? Go to the gym to exercise when the weather is hot and humid. I do not understand what you mean by "Why?". Trick Question?: Well...  If you just finished exercise at 70% pmhr, your hr is... (drumroll)... 70% pmhr. Now if you're asking about recovery, hr will generally decline to 50% pmhr within 5 minutes for most people, though it depends heavily on whether you had an anaerobic component in there too.

Yes: Resting heart rate is normally between 60-90.  It can be lower for athletes or very fit people.  The maximum heart rate is 220 minus the person's age.  The recommendation for moderate intensity exercise is to maintain heart rate at 50-70% of the maximum heart rate.

Yes: It is safe to exercise close to max heart rate. In fact if your otherwise healthy it is perfectly safe. If you have any chest pain or shortness of breath of course stop. By the way a quick and easy way to determine your max heart rate is 220 minus your age.

No but: Your maximum predicted heart rate for your age is 160. 85% of that is 136 and that would be a good workout target for you.

probably not: The maximum predicted heart rate for someone your age is 175. That's not hard and fast but 205 sounds suspicious.  You should undergo a treadmill stress test and see if you can reproduce that hr on cardiac monitoring. If not, you should wear a 30 day event monitor.

No: Really no! you would get exhausted before too long. If you do have a heart issue, though, then it may get acutely worse during strenuous exercise and that would also make you stop.
