250 to 500 mg: Magnesium deficiency has been found in many who suffer from migraine. A good retiming is to take enough till you develop diarrhea, then take one pill less. I place my patients on 500mg daily if they can tolerate it. Other important steps are, eating reg meals, proper sleep, exercise, stress reduction, and prevention and ablation meds that improve your condition

Legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables (such as spinach), milk &amp; yogurt &amp; fortified cereals are high in magnesium.

Magnesium supplement: It is smart of you to check.  Some magnesium supplements e.g. Magnesium oxide are cheap but not well absorbed.
Good one is magnesium malate.  Take enough to get 200 mg of elemental magnesium per day up to 400 mg per day.

Usually: If your kidneys work, and if you are not getting diarrhea (most people don't at that dose), then it should be a safe level to supplement, with many 1-a-day magnesium supplements being in that range. As for now there is no concrete evidence for a therapeutic benefit as per a study by university of Michigan.
Magnesium citrate is basically used for cleaning colon before procedure and  forconstipation
