It usually resolves in a week or 2 but minimizing irritation can help.

A virus--ugh!: If you use antivirals they will be gone in 7 days--if you do nothing they will be gone in 1 week.  Sorry, but there is some truth to the sarcasm.  Acyclovir ointment can be applied to  the sores.  Anesthetic creams can reduce acute pain.  I recommend keeping yourself fit to fight the viruses with healthy foods and proper sleep.

Canker sores: The cause of canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is not fully understood.  I have found it usually occurs when a patient is under stress and there is some irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth.  This can be from the bristles of a toothbrush or a hard piece of food.  Avoid spicy and acidic foods.  There are many otc products at the drug store to help ease the discomfort.

OTC or DDS: Ask your pharmacist for what OTC products available there are the best. If you need something more, see your own dentist for better advice and more powerful medications or more effective treatment.

No, but...: Not related.  However, if tooth pain is caused by infected teeth (cavities) or infected gums, the concern is that bacteria can enter the blood stream and settle out on your heart valves.  Please see your dentist.

Canker sores: are not pleasant and can be very painful. Canker sore is the most common oral lesions. Individual ulcers typically last 1-2 weeks. The condition is idiopathic (the cause is not known) and recurrent aphthous ulcers are usually self-limiting. Your dentist may prescribe an antimicrobial mouth rinse corticosteroid ointment to control the pain and irritation.

Prevention: Canker sore or more specifically aphthous ulcer can be prevented by avoiding a common foam detergent found in most toothpastes called sodium laurel sulfate.  Switching to biotene or other toothpaste not containing this ingredient can be the cure in preventing this painful condition. During an episode, 2000 mg of lysine in divided doses per day can decrease the symptoms and time involved to heal.

Canker sores: These mouth sores can be associated with herpes virus, and multiple nutritional deficits. Start with twice daily salt water rinse, add a chewable multi-vitamin daily, lysine (an amino acid) supplement. If you are not significantly better in about 10 days, get in with your doc. There are more serious possibilities. Be well.
