Canker sores: The cause of canker sores (aphthous ulcers) is not fully understood. I have found it usually occurs when a patient is under stress and there is some irritation to the mucous membranes of the mouth. This can be from the bristles of a toothbrush or a hard piece of food. Avoid spicy and acidic foods. There are many otc products at the drug store to help ease the discomfort.

Virus: There are 2 common types of mouth sores, often called canker sores or cold sores. Both are viral. One is herpes. It can occur in your mouth and outside your mouth. Usually limited to the roof of the mouth and the gum tissue right around the teeth. The other is the aphthous ulcer. It is only found in the mouth and is on all the other tissue. Acyclovir works for some with the herpes. Warm salt water.
