Loss of Smell: Your smell and taste usually returns within a few weeks. If it doesn’t see an ENT specialist... you could still be infected, polyps can develop to block the smell and viruses can cause long lasting or been permanent loss of smell and taste.

See allergist: Despite the surgery (which is only about 50% effective for chronic sinusitis), if your nasal mucosa remains very swollen it would obstruct sinus drainage leading to infection. Another possibility is impairment in your immune system so that your body can't kill off the germs. An allergist should be able to help you sort out these factors.

Yes it can: Chronic sinusitis is often associated with smell and taste impairment and unlike acute sinusitis often not associated with nasal congestion (which however might have initiated the acute infection -&gt; chronic).

COVID 19: Suspicion for COVID 19 is higher if you have at least 2 of these symptoms:  temp of at least 99.6 F (37.5 C), Cough, Shortness of breath, Chills, Shivering, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat or new loss of taste or smell. Sinusitis could also impact senses of taste and smell.

Recommend testing: It might not be COVID 19 but the lack of sense of smell is sometimes a tip off. Symptoms of COVID 19 infection may include (but aren’t limited to) dry cough, shortness of breath, nasal congestion, fever, headache, sore throat, feeling tired,  loss of sense of taste/smell, decreased appetite, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, chills without or without shaking &amp; muscle aches.

have full blockage right nasal cavity due to tumor. past month have swelling between right eye and nose. mri 2 wks ago showed postobstructive fluid on right side and aerated left. recently have bad smell/taste mucus from left nostril. is it sinusitis?

Need to be evaluated: Most of the time a loss of smell from sinusitis will improve with proper treatment including antibiotics and a course of oral steroids. You need an ENT evaluation to determine cause and proper therapy.

Get covid test : Sinusitis typically does not interfere with smell for 3 months but some covid-19 cases continue to show these  symptoms for months. 1. Get a covid test to determine if you had the virus  and thus may shed light onto your prognosis. Sadly, if it was covid-19 as cause, time for recovery is indeterminate. 2. If chronic sinusitis is still an issue, your doc can offer antibiotics, nasal lavage.

See an ENT doctor: Nasal polyps have a tendency to return over time. When they do, symptoms include pressure, difficulty breathing, and loss of sense of smell. To minimize symptoms and postpone polyp recurrence, treatment includes steroids (oral prednisone, nasal fluticasone / etc.), leukotriene inhibitors (e g singulair/ montelukast), and adjunctive treatment e g allergy testing, immunotherapy, and antihistamines.

haven't been able to smell in 2 years do to chronic sinusitis operation of sinusitis  (ethmoid bulla?), how long does it take to start smelling again

Lack of smell: Depending on the duration of lack of smell, it may or may not recover. Has the sinusitis been treat adequately since the surgery? Residual ethmoid sinusitis will keep you from smelling well. See an ENT or an allergist about your sinuses.
