can sinusitis on one side alter smell and taste? i can smell/taste some things, but not all and it comes and goes. i also have no congestion.

Yes it can: Chronic sinusitis is often associated with smell and taste impairment and unlike acute sinusitis often not associated with nasal congestion (which however might have initiated the acute infection -> chronic).
