While : While it is possible that the hyperthyroidism is unrelated to your recent surgery and just happened to start now, it is more likely that you are suffering from a traumatic thyroiditis, inflamation of the thyroid caused by trauma during the surgery. If that is the case the Methimazole won't do any good, as the gland is not overactive, it is just leaking hormone that is normally stored there. In that case the problem should resolve on its own over a few weeks. If the symptoms are a problem, perhaps an increase in the beta blocker dose will help.

my 16 yr old has an undesc. testic. just diagnos-/ thinner /loss of appetite- maybe no connection.what will all this mean -surgery/infertility?

Undescended testicle: An undescended testicle should be looked for and removed. By this time it may have atrophied but if still there needs to come out. It is not a normal testicle otherwise it would have come down into the scrotum. All the best.

Adhesions: You may have adhesions which are scar tissue after surgery. You may want to follow up with the doctor that performed your laparscopic procedure.

Follow up: 2.5 kg weight loss is probably due to water loss if you are having large amounts of diarrhea. 2.5 kg is only equivalent to 2.5L of water - not very much when compared to our total body water. This can happen to some patients who have their gallbladders removed. Probably not related to underlying cancer but it's ok to see your doctor for follow up to assess your risk factors. reduced appetite after shoulder surgery(open capsular plication) it's been 3 weeks and i have lost 8lbs, my appetite still isn't normal.is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Unusual: It is unusual to loose this much weight after shoulder surgery unless you lost lot of blood in the surgery. Some of the pain medication and even the iron supplements can cause nausea and loss of appetite. Hopefully in the next three or four weeks this will resolve .Good luck.

Some of this would: depend on the type of surgery. This might not be too unusual if you had surgery of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, colon, etc). The appetite suppressant effects of anesthesia should only last a few days, but post-op pain killers will continue to affect appetite and bowel function. Keep up the fluids, eat small amounts of appealing food frequently. Discuss with your Surgeon/Doc. Good wishes:)

No effect: If one or two parathyroids are removed leaving a thyroid lobe with 2 remaining parathyroids there will  be no  effect.  If all 4 parathyoids are damaged or removed, the calcium levels in the serum will drop and require exogenous hormone replacement. Apetite here may be effected.

is it normal to still have loss of taste even after a week after surgery (herniated cervical disks)?

Any other symptoms?: This sounds unusual however not serious and will most likely resolve on its own. Discuss with your primary doctor if not resolving within a week. Difficulty swallowing or with tongue should be seen right away.

can pain meds after surgery normally cause nausea and no appetite?

Accepted Answer

Yes and Possible: Most narcotics used for moderate to severe post op pain can cause nausea. You may lose your appetite due to a decreased gut motility, and your pain.  So, i'd only use the narcotics when absolutely necessary. I'd try an anti inflammatory compound , if ok with your surgeon, such as Ibuprofen and naproxen. Also, topical comfort of a wound can be achieved by ice initially , then heat. Good luck.

Diet: Depends what type is surgery. Consult the surgeon who performed the surgery prior to any diet.
