A combo pill vs. ARB: Losartan HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) (= Hyzaar) is a combination pill that contains both losartan (angiotensin receptor blocker) and a diuretic (hydrocholorthiazide)--"water pill"-- whereas Loasartan potassium does not contain the diuretic.

Potassium : Why are you planning to take potassium supplements? Did you get labs done to suggest low K? Losartan and HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) counteract the k handling by the kidney. Suggest have you serum potassium checked and then take and if on it have a follow up potassium done.

: If you are only concerning about low potassium which won't recur without Hctz. Low potassium (hypokalemia) is common with 50 mg of Hctz even you are taking Losartan which has K retaining effect. You do not need to have blood test repeated for potassium, only the routine blood tests which your family doctor or cardiologist requests.

Depends on Ckd : Losartan may rise potassium and HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) may lower it. Because of opposing effects potassium may stay stable/ normal. But net effect depends on degree of CKD. Potassium may be higher in advanced CKD.

That combination is effective, safe, and used very commonly because the losartan helps cancel  a troublesome side effect of hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) (potassium wasting) and hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) potentiates the effect of losartan. Your dr is on the ball.

Many interactions:: Aspirin and celexa (citalopram) can increase effects of glyburide causing lower blood sugar. Aspirin may reduce effects of losartan in lowering blood pressure. Celexa (citalopram) with aspirin may increase risk of bleeding. Sitagliptin may help control blood glucose levels thus requiring less glyburide. Sxs of low blood sugar: headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, hunger, tremor, weakness, sweating, and fast heart beat.

BP medications: Your mother's doctor has diagnosed her with hypertension and started her on losartan, which is a BP medicine along with HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) that is a diuretic. HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) also lowers BP. I suggest that nothing needs to be done, as this is a normal way to treat high BP.
