Probably not: He may have been using some new muscles (in different ways than usually). Any new activity can sometimes cause some muscle strains. If he is walking fine and able to move around easily, just keep an eye on him. If he keeps limping for a day or so, has a fever, or seems sick, see your pediatrician.

See a doctor: Have any imaging studies ever been performed?  Pain is a common complaint but given the fact it has been going on for 2 years and it sounds like there is knee swelling warrants a visit to your doctor.

Maybe: If you are an athlete then yes. Cracking is not an issue - many people crack. Pain is another story. You could just be misaligned and when you are realigned (see a chiropractor) then your pain well improve. I also have see massage therapy and acupuncture help. If it is severe then also see an orthepdist.

Many things: This could be a benign growing pain, or it could be a more serious problem.  Growing pains tend to be at night, more in the middle of long bones, resolve with massage and tylenol/ibuprofen.  If your child has any associated daytime limp, persistent complaint, avoids activity, or any swelling or redness notable in the extremity, or fever then this needs immediate attention by your physician.

See your ped doc: There are several possibilities including juvenile arthritis. Have you pediatrician evaluat the child and consider a consultation with a pediatric rheumatologist if it is deemed appropriate.

Squats knee pain: Pain from squats. Rule out arthritic changes of knees, form, and the relationship of the knee/hip/ankle. Consider temporarily stopping activities that are causing you discomfort. If you don’t want to stop all physical activity, consider cross-training that isn’t as tough on the joint. Consider other exercise:swimming aqua aerobics aqua jogging cycling. See your doc for an evaluation-

Patella femoral : If your pain is in front/under your knee cap, then most likely patella femoral pain syndrome/chondromalacia patella. Best managed with exercise to strengthen your quads to improve tracking, and avoiding deep knee bending activities. Also oral or topical nsaids can be of benefit, as well as a brace. Injection of cortisone or hyaluronic acid also very popular.  If all else fails, then scope.

hello i am an active 19 year old female and exercise regularly. i have knee pain and cracking in my right knee. what could be causing this?

Knee pain: Knee pain in females, particularly anterior knee pain is a nebulous problem. Commonly this is due to an increased q-angle. The angle from the anatomic axis of the femur to the tibial tubercle which causes your patella to glide on the outside of the trochlea, causing pain. Physical therapy with quad strengthening is our treatment of choice, but a difficult problem to treat.
