No test is 100%: Although an MRI is a good test it can miss an Abnormality.  For example a locking knee can be caused by a torn meniscus that flaps. At the time of the MRI it could have been laying back in place.  Talk to your ortho.  You may still need a scope

Common finding: Most patients undergoing knee MRI will have a trace amount of fluid in the joint space.  This is  considered a normal physiologic finding.

It's the best: A meniscus does not show on an x-ray.  The history and physical exam can really help make the diagnosis.  An arthrogram, dye and air injected into the knee used to be used to help decide if a tear is present or not. Painful test, often inconclusive, and frankly just about a lost art.  An MRI is fast, painless, and rarely wrong.  Mris are usually done prior to suggesting surgery.

It is a common find.: I assume you are asking is the finding unusual?  The answer is the finding is a very common finding, especially in older patients.  If you are having knee pain,  your physician should do a good physical exam to see if your findings on MRI correlate to the MRI findings.  As this interpretation can be an incidental finding, you need to discuss your physical findings together with the  report.

Celery Stalk: The &#x27;celery stalk&#x27; finding on knee MRI is a sign of mucoid degeneration of the ACL.  Typically patients present with knee pain or restricted movement, although often other potential causes for the patient&#x27;s symptoms are found.The pathogenesis remains controversial. Possible etiologies include
age related degeneration, or congenital or acquired synovial tissue entrapment between ACL fibers.

Easily!: The effusion can actually help identify a meniscal tear, since it provides additional "contrast". The meniscus is dark on MRI and the effusion is usually gray or white depending on the pulse sequence used.

Yes mri: Mri can demonstrate baker's cyst also diagnostic ultrasound studies. It is cheaper.

Conservative Rx: Depends upon your primary complaint and whether there was a mechanism of injury. Chondromalacia(i.e.Cartilage wear=arthritis) is common and can cause swelling and pain. Collateral ligament strains/partial tears (mcl+lcl) should be managed well conservatively. Recommend seeing a pt for motion, strengthening, edema control. Am a fan of a stationary bike as well (nonimpact knee motion+strengthening).

how long does it take for arthritis to develop in a knee joint? i had surgery and the surgeon said my knee was clean but a mri told a different story

Years: The arthritic process is a gradual loss of the smooth surface on the end of the bone. Degenerative arthritis takes years to develop whereas post traumatic arthritis can happen over a relatively short period of time.  Mri often times finds things or can be interpreted as change without really having clinical significance.
