MRI great tool: Mri detects 95% of injuries in your knee, but not 100%. An effusion means fluid in the knee, but is non-specific. There are dozens of causes of knee joint swelling. The MRI is helpful in making decisions regarding whether surgery is indicated and if so, can help in planning for your surgeon. The gold standard, however, is looking inside the knee with the scope. Consider 2nd opinion.
