If a mri detects a knee joint effusion how can they see meniscal tears? i really don't know what to do with my knee pain surgeon can't help me help

Easily!: The effusion can actually help identify a meniscal tear, since it provides additional "contrast". The meniscus is dark on MRI and the effusion is usually gray or white depending on the pulse sequence used.

MRI great tool: Mri detects 95% of injuries in your knee, but not 100%. An effusion means fluid in the knee, but is non-specific. There are dozens of causes of knee joint swelling. The MRI is helpful in making decisions regarding whether surgery is indicated and if so, can help in planning for your surgeon. The gold standard, however, is looking inside the knee with the scope. Consider 2nd opinion.
