Knee problem: Have u injured your knee? May have torn a meniscus with a piece getting caught in the joint space & limiting  flexion. Another possibility is a baker's cyst at the back of the knee (unlikely at your age). See your pcp or orthopedics for full knee evaluation & options for treatment.

why does my knee feel crunchy when i bend it?

Accepted Answer

Many reasons: The most common and likely cause of cracking/popping in front of the knee is an irritated or early wear of the knee cap cartilage or the surface cartilage of the thigh bone that it rubs. Other causes could include a meniscus tear, plica, patellar tendonitis etc. Some fluid build up in the knee causes cracking. Try therapy, antiinflammatories, ice and sometimes a knee sleeve. See orthopedist.

Yes: One is called DynaSplint. Several brands on the market. These are commonly used for stiff knees after a surgical procedure to help them get motion back when it seems to be taking too long or everything else has not worked.

Accepted Answer

Probably weak quads: People with weak quadriceps tend to have problems with knee.  The quadriceps are the groups of muscle on top of the thighs.  It's  known that regular wearing of high-heels can weaken the quadriceps.  I suggest starting quads strengthening exercise 4-5 times a week with a daily 10-15 repetitions of leg raise against 5-10 lbs weight to start.

Possible damage: It is possible that you simply sprained the knee ligaments or surrounding muscles and the knee will heal soon. If there was no swelling or discoloration it probably indicates no major damage. Sometimes a small cartilage tear can cause fluid to collect within the joint making full bending of the joint difficult until the fluid dissipates. See an orthopedic surgeon if the symptom persists.

Not necessarily: Clicking in the knees can be common, and usually painless.  If it does not cause discomfort, or cause symptoms like locking or catching, then it is often within normal.  If symptoms exist, then warrants an evaluation.

Many things: Could be degenerative or injured cartilage, calcifications or nodules within tendons, loose bodies in the joint space, etc.
See your doctor and have this evaluated.

Stiffness may be...: Perceived as a snapping feeling. There are many diagnoses that this could be. A good knee examination will help figure out this issue.

If it causes symptom: Clicking in the knees is common, and you will see that question even in other posts on this site.  If it is painless, and does not cause locking or catching, or other mechanical symptoms, then it can be benign.  If symptoms exist, then warrants an evaluation.  But most frequently the clicking is not problematic and not symptomatic.

Chondromalacia: Painful grinding of the knees with bending is usually a sign of a condition known as patellar chondromalacia.  This refers to an irregular or rough cartilage surface of the kneecap.  Exercising to strengthen the thigh muscles is the best treatment.  Oral nsaid's such as Ibuprofen may help. Orthopaedic consult may be necessary to assist in treatment.
