my areolas have been super itchy. it's been off and on for 4 or 5 months now, and its just so itchy. i apply lotion everyday so it can't be dry skin..

Dermatitis: This sounds ilke probable dermatitis, which is inflammation of the lower parts of the skin. It is a form of eczema, which requires regular moisturization, and prescription creams sometimes as well.  However, there are more serious conditions that can occur on the areola, so i would have it further evaluated.

Hormone changes: Hormone changes are most likely but if you are not drinking as much (possibly due to nausea or sickness) and are dehydrated, that would also contribute. Use a good moisturizer.

Dry skin: To prevent or treat dry skin: 1. Hydrate orally with water.  2. Use sun screen liberally. 3. Take warm baths or showers instead of hot ones. 4. Avoid  “deodorant” or  abrasive soaps – opt  for mild cleansers/soaps/shower gels. 5. Apply moisturizing lotion before the skin is fully dry.

Irritation: Irritated skin will burn with contact with water. Burning usually resolves in a few minutes, and will stop once healed.

Allergy,infection: Causes include scabies, a mite infection, a reaction to a medication, a reaction to laundry detergent, fabric softener, new clothing. In addition it could be sign of eczema where rash is not yet apparent. If significant and not improved with otc cream see dermatologist or primary care physician.

Minimize bathing: One important thing to try is minimizing his bathing to every three days or so.  Be careful about using the stronger steroid on thinner skin. The groin and face you should use a weaker cortisone 1% otc.  Also use a scent free soap like dove scent free.   Good luck!
