Yes..yes...but: Tramadol is an opiate and can be used with norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen).  Tramadol can be addicting but less so than Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) (hydrocodone).  In treating pain, i tend to prefer tramadol to Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) actually.   There are many non-opioid treatments of pain that are not addicting at all.  Good luck.

Tramadol=Opiate: A common misconception is that tramadol is not an opiate.  In fact, it is.  An opiate is defined as a medication that binds to a specific type of receptor called a mu receptor;tramadol binds to this receptor.  Therefore it causes typical opiate related side effects including nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, sedation and respiratory depression.

Accepted Answer

No: To clarify, if you are on long term opiates and take tramadol there is no withdrawal. Long term tramadol does have a withdrawal syndrome however. The 2 drugs are additive and can cause sleepiness and respiratory depression and should NOT be taken at the same time as the work on the same receptors and would provide no further benefit.

Tapering is best: Tramadol is a synthetic opiate with weak Mu opiate agonist activity and some re-uptake inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin. In translation: it acts like a weak narcotic AND antidepressant at the same time.   It has a long half life: 7 hours. So it takes a while (4-5 half lives) to build up and to come out of the body. Taper over 2 weeks reducing the dose 10% per day to avoid withdrawal.

Yes: If the tramadol is being prescribed, talk to the prescriber about a tapering regimen. If it is not prescribed, this is part of a substance use disorder, and you should seek help. Tapering can be done with a cross-reactive drug like buprenorphine (Suboxone) or methadone, or can be done with tramadol itself. However, counseling and a support program is also a necessary part of recovery. Good luck.

: Long term use of any opiate would cause withdrawal just like tramadol. What is more important is to find other ways of managing pain if possible to reduce dependence on opiates and look for non opiates in addition to like physical therapy or biofeedback to manage chronic pain. Three days use of medication is less likely to cause withdrawal.

Urine drug screen: Tramadol may turn up in a drug screen depending on how extensive the panel of drug requested. It is not an opioid, and should not show up as such. However, prior to any drug screen, it's important to inform your tester of what prescription drugs you're currently taking. If you're taking tramadol that is not prescribed to you, I suggest that you seek drug/addiction counseling.

Several: There are many pain medications that are not narcotic or opiate medication.  The NSAID class for example may help, Acetaminophen may help, anti-spasmodics, muscle relaxants may help. etc.  BUT, you first need to be properly diagnosed so the underling cause is revealed and you do not mask pain, which i the bodies way of telling you "something is wrong." bruised my ribs 1 wk ago. was given tramadol (can't take opiates) and flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) . i am so constipated, no bm since injury. took mom & nothing-help!!!!

Colace, (docusate sodium) senna: There are  other combinations such as prune juice or colace and senna or miralax (polyethylene glycol) that can help with the constipation. unfortunately the tramadol may be constipating as it has opioid like properties even though it is synthetic. Therefore you may want to try topical diclofenac, also called Pennsaid or lidocaine, or lidoderm patch for the pain.
