Yes: Diverticulosis, the presence of little pockets in the wall of the colon does not usually require surgery. If these pockets, or diverticuli, cause symptoms, then surgery may be required.  Lower abdominal pain with fevers can be caused by a burst pocket - this is what is called diverticulitits.  Surgery for diverticulitis is needed for recurrent attacks or those that do not respond to antibiotics.

Not specifically: The condition of diverticulosis is a highly common finding of small out-pouches in the wall of the colon, most commonly the sigmoid colon. But diverticulosis can affect the entire colon. Surgery is not performed unless there are complications such as repeated infections of diverticulitis, colon stricturing or narrowing, serious bleeding.

Depends: Discuss with your doc. 
Surgery is always last resort.
Dietary changes to decrease constipation. Or meds too can help.Other lifestyle options may be helpful.
Probiotic supplementation would not hurt. They could at least help replace your bacterial flora from the antibiotics you have taken.

Sometimes: Surgery is recommended for problems with recurrent infection from diverticulitis. Just having diverticulosis without infections is very common & does not benefit from surgery.

Eat: A high fiber diet and drink 80-100 ounces of caffeine free/alcohol free fluid daily, and avoid constipation. Call your doctor immediately if you should get left lower abdominal pain with a fever and get on a clear liquid diet until he can see you or send you to the er.

i am having my colon removed due to pan diverticulosis. what can i expect after the surgery regards to diet and normal activities? i won't have a bag.

Diverticular dz: Extensive diverticulosis is one of the indications for total colectomy there did you get repeated infections, were you symptomatic with pain, fever , bleeding in stools etc. Removing the colon will still allows you to lead a normal life though initially you will need low residue diet, that means avoiding bulk forming food so that you,initially you have some loose stools but slowly will be adjusted

Significant: Resect - remove the damaged obstructed segment and hook the bowel back together.

Hopefully no problems, but ask risks, benefits and complications of the surgeon and team.

Surgery not for IBS: This may only be a partial answer to your question.  Surgery is not indicated for IBS or "spastic colon".  IBS is a functional disorder and cannot be cured by the knife.  It must be managed in more conservative ways.  Now if there is luminal narrowing of your colon, you must get seen to find out why and it is possible that surgical intervention may help depending on the etiology.

hello doctor .what is difference between divertuculum, divertucula and diverticulosis of colon.my test showed diverticulum caused by a faecolith,i tried reading online about it but confusing . changed diet, gastro doctor suggesting surgery thanks?

: Diverticulum is singular, diverticula plural. Diverticulosis is the condition of having colonic diverticula. It is diverticulitis when inflamed or infected. Fecaliths do not cause these conditions, but often are present. Whether or not surgery is needed depends on how well antibiotics work or continuing symptoms. If a gastroenterologist recommends surgery, probably it is necessary. Good luck.

my boyfriend has diverticulosis without hemmorage. ct scan and rectal contrast he had done. just showed bowel thickness. maybe abscess maybe surgery?

Depends on his: symptoms.  If symptoms resolve after treatment with antibiotics, then medical treatment without surgery should be ok.  If symptoms recur, or pain, fever, bleeding, or diarrhea, intervene, then surgery might become necessary.  Most importantly, make sure that this is not colon cancer.  Have him consult with a gi specialist just to be sure.
