Nothing else works: Nail fungus is difficult to eradicate.  A determination first test be made to the type of fungus being treated.  I muscle orally is effective in about 85% of the cases.  Most topicals are a  waste of time and money.  More recently, laser therapy have been employed but if the entire nail is involved it  may not be as effective as oral antifungal agents.

Be safe: for now I would only recommend any OTC antifungal cream such as Lotrimin ( clotrimazole ), actually even sold at the Dollar Tree and Dollar store.  Apply a large pea size drop of cream on a Q-TIP and apply and massage into the area. No pills! You may lose the hard nail; however small amounts of antifungal cream will not hurt you. Do not attempt to remove the nail yourself.

a few of my toenails are quite thick and yellow/brittle. i thought it was fungal but apparently not from lab tests. podiatrist says its nail dystrophy and is having me use urea otc. is nail dystrophy serious? will urea help? thanks so much?

: Since onychomycosis( fungal infection) has been ruled out, I would suspect that chronic microtrauma to your toenails from foot wear or walking technique is responsible for your toenail thickening. Urea supposedly softens thickened toenails.

: This disclosure is to cover for the fact of its ineffectiveness on severe infection. You can try it and if it fails tell your MdD so she/he can prescribe the proper med. Or you can see a Podiatrist.

Low risk: Every treatment has risk, some big, some small. There are currently few approved treatments for nail fungus...Consult with your doc for the most appropriate treatment for you...

Onychomycosis: These usually require oral medications which can only be obtained by prescription.  See a doctor and get this treated asap.  They can cause permanent loss of nails and other problems if not dealt with contemporaneously.
