Usually not: Penicillin antibiotics are not intrinsically nephrotoxic.  Rare patients develop allergic interstitial nephritis from penicillins.  This is characterized by fever, eosinophilia, eosinophiluria, progressive renal insufficiency and sometimes skin rash.

can penicillin affect kidney function?

Accepted Answer

Yes but rare: Penicillin is mostly metabolized/breakdown by the liver and the by-product is then excreted to the outside world via the kidneys in the urine. Typically this does not affect kidney functions, but in the rare cases when penicillin causes interstitial nephritis, renal function is affected. So, if you are not taking any else and now has kidney trouble with penicillin, get it checked. Good luck.

UTI: Both are not primary choice. Antibiotic course depends on bacteria growing in urine, detecble via urine cukture. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or Macrobid ot Ciproflixacin are usually first choice. Please see doc. Thanks. Xf

i was prescribed penicillin for bacterial sinusitis. can penicillin v cause orange-reddish urine? 2 months ago i had kidney stones could it be related?- so far i have no other symptoms i.e flank pain

?hematuria: Sounds more like the Kidney stone issue or some Urogenital tract issue that is most likely causing blood in the urine that you are seeing.  Doubt it has anything to do with the Penicillin.  See the Dr. to get the hematuria assessed.  Best wishes.

Daily penicillin: Will not likely affect your kidney but you are likely to have penicillin resistant bacteria colonizing you.  Daily therapy can be used for prophylaxis against rheumatic fever or pneumococcal infection in certain people.

Lump at site of inje: It is not normal but it happens  often, apply warm compresses with gentle  massage  several time daily , that will help to resolve the lumps, good luck.

Azithromycin i: Azithromycin is a good alternative if you can't tolerate those two.

was prescribed cefdinir for ear infection. is that normal? why not a penicillin? is cefdinir harder on the stomach?

Accepted Answer

: With ear infections there are multiple possible germs involved. An antibiotic known to kill multiple types of germs like cefdinir is more likely to do the job than penicillin.  Far too many germs are now resistant to penicillin. Individual people have more or less issues with any medication. I don't find cefdinir often triggers stomach issues.

sore throat with yellow puss bags on throat wall so hard to swallow.been 5 days, no fever, no runny nose or cough, and no improvement on penicillin?

Accepted Answer

Go back to doctor: This may be viral, or possibly a rare bacterial cause of pharyngitis other than group a strep.  You may need a throat culture, or perhaps just some reassurance but you should certainly have this re-examined.  Hope you are better soon.
