No it not contagious: Onychomycosis is not contagious like a cold or other infectious diseases.  Fungus loves warm, dark, moist environments so kids shouldn't share socks or shoes.  The nails normally will split, turn white or yellow, and eventually may peel or fall off.  Toenail fungus is difficult to treat with topical meds.  If you have difficulty treating at home, call your doctor.

Fungus: A fungus may colonize a nail. This is common on toes and sometimes fingers. It is much more common among people who sleep with sox on their feet. Chronic- recurrent foot fungus is seen with it. Some people seem to be more likely to have it as a family trait, probably a genetic variation. Sometimes it is seen on 2 feet but just 1 hand. It can be treated. Dermatophytes are never systemic!

Finally, a clipping can be sent as a biopsy and read using special stains to highlight the fungus.  This is the most accurate method and fast.

Oral Antifungals: Oral antifungals like Lamisil (terbinafine) or itraconazole, Fluconazole or ketoconazole are the best to treat fungus in the nails. However, using topical anti fungal medications after the nail fungus is clear is wise so as to minimize the risk of reinfection of the nail.

Lamasil cost $1200 , but now generic terbinafine costs $10 at wallmart. It is very safe but prudent to do blood tests at 6 weeks.

Possibly: It is possible to get athlete's foot from shower floors (in hotels, gyms, etc) caused by a dermatophyte which can later cause toenail fungus aka onychomycosis.
