What are the tests for onychomycosis?

Nail Clipping: Testing for onychomycosis is done by three methods. The first is a toenail scrapping for examination in the office under the microscope. Next, clippings from the nails can be sent for fungal culture (typically takes 30 days and is only 50% accurate). Finally, a clipping can be sent as a biopsy and read using special stains to highlight the fungus. This is the most accurate method and fast.

Sample to lab.: Toenail fungus is very common, and unfortunately very difficult to cure 100%. We can test the nail by taking a sample and sending it to a lab to see if it is a callused or traumatized nail or if it is indeed fungus, and from there you have several options: topical or oral antifungal medications, laser nail treatment, or removal of the nail in severe cases.
