A member asked:

Is onychomycosis in children contagious and is it normal for fingernails to turn white and fall of from it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No it not contagious: Onychomycosis is not contagious like a cold or other infectious diseases. Fungus loves warm, dark, moist environments so kids shouldn't share socks or shoes. The nails normally will split, turn white or yellow, and eventually may peel or fall off. Toenail fungus is difficult to treat with topical meds. If you have difficulty treating at home, call your doctor.
