is it safe to get a tattoo on arms or chest after double mastectomy?

Never safe: It is your body do what you want, but majority of physicians will dis courage you to the tatooing due to inherent potential  risk of getting infections like hepatitis, hiv, syphilis, serious reaction to the metalic pigments, which also preclude you to get a MRI in future. You can not be blood donor for at least one year. If you decide to have reconstructive surgery , tattoo will be distorted.

Depends : If you have chronic swelling of the arm from the lymph node dissection,  you are best using the other arm.

Both!: Most women who have a breast operation that sacrifices the nipple not only get reconstruction of some kind, but they also get a fake nipple made.  This involves a minor skin operation, which raises up a nipple-like bump, and a tattoo.

Without knowing: Your exact history, it is impossible to say, but left shoulder pain can come from heart.  Or it could be spread of cancer to bone.  It could be something as serious as a fracture or pulmonary embolism, or simple as a sprain, or even shingles.  Time to go see a doctor for evaluation for all of these possibilities.

had a radical mastectomy on right breast, 27 years ago, never had problem with arm until recently. some lympnodes were removed. now i'm having sharp almost electric like pains in upper stem every 30 to 60 seconds. what can i do?

: It is unlikely those 2 distant events are related. I wonder if you had a covid-19 vaccine in the last couple days because it can cause the axillary pain in the opposite side due to reactive lymph nodes after the vaccine. If not vaccinated recently, you need to watch the area for the rashes in the next 1-2 days; if rashes appear, you have shingles and your need to see your doctor ASAP.

Lymphedema: Sounds like lymphedema even though a SLN biopsy/dissection was not done (?) on the non affected side. Ask to see a lymphedema specialist for help.

cold persistent numbness in left thigh 6 weeks post op from radical mastectomy and reconstruction, 2 weeks post op from dpc/debridement of infection on right breast. 22 years old, previous dvt in left arm following shoulder surgery. could it be dvt?

DVT: It is a possibility but unlikely. Let your doctor know about it so that he can make a definitive diagnosis

I would advise: Against getting tattoos on the same arm as the mastectomy.  If you develop an infection, it could become a problem, even though it might be trivial in under normal circumstances.  Ask your surgeon to be sure.

Accepted Answer

Yes yes yes: That is a good option. Depending on the indication for the double mastectomy, the emotional and medical issues, the breast implants, aka reconstruction, can take a back seat. Which means, sometimes it is overwhelming to process all the changes and decisions. Good news is the implants can be done when you are ready. Take a friend with you. Be well.

Yes: If someone has a high risk inherited mutation or other circumstances that increase significantly the risk for breast cancer, that person can be considered for a preventative mastectomy.
