i fractured my 2nd metatarsal and had cast off 3 days ago. my foot seems very swollen and i can feel a lump where the break was, should i worry? how long can it be like this, very painful when walking

Better get an X-ray: The bone could be broken.  Your description sounds like a perfect indication for an x-ray evaluation.

Healing bone ?: A hard lump developing near a fracture area, especially the toe, can be associated with the solidification of the fragments of the fracture. To remove all doubt, have your foot examined.

Lumps and bumps:: These are tough to diagnose without seeing them! You don't say which side of the foot the hard lump is on, where on the side, or how long you have had it. This may be a bunion, do a google image search for bunion and see if that looks like what you have.
 See a podiatrist to get an exact diagnosis, and treatment, or  tips for prevention of further damage, if needed.

i smashed my foot on a wall yesterday and it's now got a big lump and swelling along the side of my foot. is it possible i've chipped a bone?

Possible but...: Since you used the word "smashed, " bone injury is possible. If you did not develop bruising, probably not. There are bones on the side of the foot where tendons attach that move your foot, so if it hurts when you move the foot without putting weight on it, that would suggest a possible bone injury.  If you can start to walk on it after 2-3 days, probably not a major bone injury. X-ray.

? cyst: It could be a ganglion cyst. If so, unless it is causing pain no intervention is needed.

Synovial Cyst: It sounds like a synovial cyst.  If it doesn't bother you, it should be just fine if left alone... it might even go away.  If it starts to bother you or continues to grow, have it checked out by your family doc.  Hope this helps!
