I smashed my foot on a wall yesterday and it's now got a big lump and swelling along the side of my foot. is it possible i've chipped a bone?

Possible but...: Since you used the word "smashed, " bone injury is possible. If you did not develop bruising, probably not. There are bones on the side of the foot where tendons attach that move your foot, so if it hurts when you move the foot without putting weight on it, that would suggest a possible bone injury. If you can start to walk on it after 2-3 days, probably not a major bone injury. X-ray.

Yes: You can not tell the severity of the injury by looking at it. You need an x ray. Make an appointment to see a podiatric physician. While waiting, use the rice principle. Rest, ice, compression and elevation. Try to stay off the foot.
