had an anaphylactic reaction to a tetanus shot when young; no one wants to give me a shot.  is there any way to test whether there really is an issue?

Allergist: An allergy specialist might be able to do this. But maybe not necessary. Tetanus is extremely rare. Although periodic re-immunization is wise, it's optional for most people not at special risk. Discuss the issues and possible referral with your primary care physician.

i just received a booster tetanus shot yesterday morning. tonight, i am running a 101 degree fever. is that a normal reaction?

Most likely yes: probably from shot. But look for other causes like for sore throat cough flu like symptoms urinary symptoms that may signify another infection. If fever last more than 24 hours check with your PCP

as infant, my son had reaction to dpt, so was given only dt.  now 28, he is told he can't have tetanus shot bcause it will contain pertussis.  true?

Not true: there is an adult tetanus vaccine that does not contain pertussis. Maybe the person who told him that doesn't have it, but it's available.  His local health department can provide it.

May be allergy: It would be wise to see an allergist before considering another booster.Some people can develop a significant reaction to the tetanus toxoid used in the shot, or other components of the vaccine.

Tetanus shot: By all means you should get a tetanus shot and to be sure you are properly immunized you should have three a month apart. The only side effect might be a sore arm for a day or two

Recovery: Well, you've asked your immune system to 'multi-task' - processing 2 vaccines at one time, that cover for multiple diseases (several strains of flu, several different diseases- diphtheria, ?pertussis with the tetanus shot). It's completely NORMAL to feel this way. Kind of like going to the gym and working out - you definitely feel it. I expect you'll recover fine. Sleep, chicken soup, rest, etc.

Probably yes: Need Td booster only if more than 10 years since your last tetanus shot.  Get it within 48 hrs of injury

Wash area well (soap and water).  Cover with Bandaid

Every 10 years: Tetanus shots are recommended every 10 years for people older than 6 who have had the primary series. If you get a puncture wound or a wound that is contaminated with dirt or fecal material see your doctor or go to the er. Depending on your tetanus vaccine history you may need a booster shot. If you haven't had a booster with pertussis vaccine, it's recommended for your next one. It's called tdap.
