how reliable is the ibschek blood test for ibs? also is crp blood test for ibd accurate? seeing my doc this week but just wanted your opinions? thanks

Far from 100%: This much-discussed blood work is only one piece of the puzzle. It's not worthless. Biopsy is the gold standard and not always practical, and these labs which correlate some but are not altogether sensitive or specific are just intended to help with the real decision -- do we treat for inflammatory bowel disease or not?

EKG: Consider ischemia which is not enough blood getting to heart because of blocked arteries or an aortic stenosis or old heart attack. Would be good to know how old you are and what other problems you have to give better answer. Happy to do 2nd opinion now.

taking mebeverine 3 times for ibs.the med seems work for me but i fell excessive thirst and light back pain at midnight.is there any same other med?

Pretty sure I've: answered this before.
There are several different groups of IBS medications.
There are ones that just slow the gut down (imodium, bentyl, (dicyclomine) mebeverine are three) these can work by activating narcoitc recenptors (imodium) or blocking the hormone acetylcholine (bentyl) These don't get out of the gut so have few other effects.
Can also change serotonin levels (first gen anti-depressants).

i pass blood with bowel movement constant bowel pains.my gp says it may be ibs.the spasmongal tablets i have, don't seem to work. anything else to try?

Blood is bad: Bright red blood in stool or black tarry colored stool referred to as melena are both reasons for concern.  Ibs, a diagnosis of exclusion, by itself will not usually cause blood in stool, you will likely need to get a colonoscopy if you haven't already to find the cause of your bleeding.  See your doctor again to get this diagnosed and treated.

can leg pain and lower back pain be associated with ibs.when i have gas i suffer sometimes with severe legs and back pain.is this normal? ?

Varies: Ibs  usually does not directly cause leg pain, but a percentage of patients with ibs can have an associated inflammatory arthritis which can cause back and leg pain.  Don't hesitate to be seen and evaluated.

Location location: Your fibroids individually are not very big but in sum are bigger than your uterus.  They likely are contributing to your heavy periods.  If wishing to conceive, would evaluate other potential causes before making decision whether to proceed with removal of fibroids.

Rome 3 criteria: Irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) is a condition associated w/ abdominal discomfort, altered /alternating stool pattern, accompanying nausea, bloating, gassiness. Often improved by stooling, ibs is defined by changes in perception of gut distension, motility, sensation. Diet & emotional stress may be a factor. Rome 3 diagnostic criteria must 1st rule out inflammation, ischemia, & infection. See doc.

would serovera  help ulcerative colitis?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: Many holistic therapies have been tried for uc, some with success. It probably wouldn't hurt so give it a try.  Give it a week or two,  if no improvement, save your money.  Usual rx is 5-asa compounds.  See a good gastroenterologist.

Could be  anything: Need urgent  investigation , examination by your physician to find the cause of symptoms from colitis to cancer. Please see your physician for tests including endoscopy of colon.

how will irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) differ from ibd?

Not even close!: Inflammatory bowel disease (see my earlier healthtap answer) is a systemic inflammation of the gut.  Irritable bowel syndrome is a symptom complex without inflammation. Symptoms for both may be similar/ recurrent. The term "colitis" (=colon inflammation) is often erroneously applied to ibs patients. Ibd patients can have ibs, & ibs patients can develop ibd but the two are etiologically unrelated.
