Not even close!: Inflammatory bowel disease (see my earlier healthtap answer) is a systemic inflammation of the gut. Irritable bowel syndrome is a symptom complex without inflammation. Symptoms for both may be similar/ recurrent. The term "colitis" (=colon inflammation) is often erroneously applied to ibs patients. Ibd patients can have ibs, & ibs patients can develop ibd but the two are etiologically unrelated.
