Pretty sure I've: answered this before. There are several different groups of IBS medications. There are ones that just slow the gut down (imodium, bentyl, (dicyclomine) mebeverine are three) these can work by activating narcoitc recenptors (imodium) or blocking the hormone acetylcholine (bentyl) These don't get out of the gut so have few other effects. Can also change serotonin levels (first gen anti-depressants).
