i was prescribed proparacaine for severe eye pain due to a corneal ulcer. how long should it be used for? seven days seems too long

Accepted Answer

Not standard of care: A prescription for proparicaine is not the standard of care for a corneal ulcer as it may mask your pain and your ulcer may progress potentially to the point of blindness.  Antibiotic drops and/or ointment should clear the ulcer with cloae folllow up.

is it normal for eyes to hurt in bright light i.e sunlight? my eyes hurt in bright sunlight even when iam not looking directly into the sun. is this normal?

Accepted Answer

: Light sensitivity has many possible etiologies. People with light colored eyes usually are more light sensitive than others, this is not progressive. The main cause I have seen is dryness of the eye surface, this is easily treated with over the counter lubricating eye drops. Cataract and inflammation inside the eye are less common causes but need to be evaluated.

was at a bonfire with friends and now my eyes hurt a lot the next day, does the smoke and fire from that pose any dangerous risk to my eyes and health?

Should recover: Unless you were dangerously close to fire and smoke, the irritation to your eyes and respiratory tract should improve without any residual damage. Of course if eye discomfort,visual disturbance,severe cough  or breathing issues continue, get examined by a physician.

Get it checked: You need to consult your doctor and get chacked as it may be a complication of your viral cold like sinus infection, which may require antibiotics if determined to be bacterial.

Ocular Migraine : Temporary blind spots and formed flashes-scintillating schotomas are part of the ocular migraine or ophthalmic (also called ocular) migraine.  Patients have spasms of the arteries at supply the eye and get these symptoms. Temporary loss of blood flow causes temporary sight loss.  If it persists or interferes with daily activities then go to your primary care doctor for an exam and treatment.

Solar eclipse: Did you look at it directly or via a safe method? If the former, see an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) asap; you may have burned your retina.

Depends: Is the pain from the eye or from the eyelids?   Does it hurt to move the eye?  Is the vision disturbed?  Have you had an attack like this in the past? You would do well to see an eye doctor --- but in a hurry if the vision is down or the eye is very red.

General health?: Sometimes vision changes can be caused by high or low blood sugar - it is important to be tested for diabetes. Also, sometimes thyroid disease can cause eye changes. Try to avoid too much caffeine and concentrated sugars and see if that helps.  Also, it is common in the 40's for the lenses of the eyes to lose the ability to change focus, so I would recommend another eye exam.

i put ice on both my eyes. now my eyes look tired & puffy. when i press my upper lid, eyes hurt. with massage, pain reduced. any eye drops, i can use?

Meibomitis: You might want to see an ophthalmologist.  Allergies do well with cold compresses which did not work for you.  Massaging the eye releases the bad oil out of the lids and makes them feel better.

Should see an ophthalmologist who can properly diagnose and treat this for you.  In the mean time try warm compresses instead!

3 yr old toddler complaining both her eyes hurt all the time for about 2 weeks now. at first i thought it was just a thirst headache. seeing dr 2morro?

Eye pain: This sounds worrisome...I would take her to see a pediatric ophthalmologist soon....
