If surgery was done because your nerve is under pressure (as in carpal tunnel syndrome), the numbness may resolve quickly if your symptoms were not too constant or chronic.

Depends: The amount of post-operative depends entirely on what procedure is being performed. Simple surgeries such has trigger finger release or carpal tunnel release are less painful than more involved surgeries. Also, pain perception varies from patient to patient.

Varies: If, by swelling you mean an increase in size of a finger, palm, etc - this usually disappears within one month.  Keeping your hand elevated will minimize the swelling.  However, after hand surgery, months of therapy might be necessary to recuperate motion, etc.

Not typically.: As long as you can feel and grip, your ability to write should not change.  If you have significant weakness after surgery, you may notice some temporary changes in your writting. These usually resolve as you recover from surgery.  Occupational therapy may be needed after surgery.

Depends: Some amount of hand swelling after hand surgery is normal. The amount of hand swelling depends on the condition and the treatment needed for the condition. Is important to control the swelling mostly with elevation and keeping the fingers moving. If this fails occupational therapists can help to reduce the swelling.

Accepted Answer

Hand wound: It is not unusual for palm incisions to "gap".  Typically i would soak the wound with soapy water for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per day and keep it covered with a band aide or dry gauze depending in the size of the wound.  I typically do not recommend ointment   i would let your treating surgeon know to make sure they agree.  This can delay healing for 1-2 weeks.
