Good diagnostic test: The hysterosalpingogram/ hsg test is the best non-surgical way to check that the fallopian tubes are open, and are normal width & not swollen. It's a good screening test that can pick up polyps or fibroids inside the uterus. Sometimes we see evidence of scarring around the tubes. It's an important fertility test to do before treatment. Some get pregnant after hsg but not really treatment by itself.

Good luck: It sounds like your fertility will improve now.  Most women have cramping after a hsg.  You could take some motrin.

Sort of ...: The hsg is an x-ray test performed by gently pushing contrast through the tubes to see if they are open or blocked. Some studies have shown an increase in pregnancy after the test but usually with a type of contrast that we do not use much anymore. Depending on your situation, you could try to conceive for a few months after the test. Mostly, we just push ahead. Best wishes.

So far so good: Male partners need to be evaluated with semen analysis, this is usually one of the first tests done. On the female side laparoscopy is an important part of the workup to identify pelvic peritoneal problems, although usually it's done after the above tests.

Yes: She will need to see what her amh level is for another test of ovarian reserve. She can do ovulation predictor kits to see if she ovulated. A Progesterone level 7 days after ovulation will help as well. She can get a TSH and prolactin level as well. Then you both can have a consult with her md about options.

: Infertility can be primary or secondary &amp; can have many causes, one of which is scarring of the Fallopian tubes (usually from a previous infection or surgery).  A HSG (hysterosalpingogram) is a dye test that can determine if the tubes are patent (open) or not, &amp; sometimes the procedure can actually help open the tube.

Yes: Hsg's determine if the inside of the uterus is normal and if the tubes are open. Laparoscopy evaluates the tubes from the outside and due can be flushed to see if they're open. Hysteroscopy should also be included to evaluate the inside of the uterus.

HSG wow: Hsg is appropriate (at some point) for all females undergoing fertility treatment. It tests your tubes; the alternative test is surgery. Of course you can refuse it, but some doctors - me for instance - will not treat you  (prescriptions) more than 3 cycles if you decline. No one will give you general anesthesia, some will give valium for anxiety (i don't ever), but thats another story.).
