Many are HPV: Many oral cancers are caused by hpv.  A biopsy specimen can be tested to help determine if it might by hpv related. Many oral cancers are cureable.  We rate or 'stage' cancer based on size, location, and any spread to lymph nodes in the neck and beyond.  Larger tumors with more spread are harder to cure.  Many believe that hpv related cancers are easier to cure. Start with an exam by an ent.

side of my tongue in back on right if i pull it out i see reddish bumps, kinda very slightly bigger than other side and feels a bit sore, smoked but quit 40 years ago, never drank and no hpv, could this be cancer? what are the odds? worried!! 59 y/o?

: Most likely it is not cancer... oral cancer would not manifest itself as a series of "reddish bumps", and it certainly not be bilateral in nature. Could be circumvallate papilla. See your dentist to be perfectly certain.

Antibodies/exam: Your physician may be able to do a test that can identify if you have developed antibodies to the strain of the virus.An ENT may also be able to examine the back of your tongue & throat & identify areas where the germ may have activity. However, once you have it, it can stay forever & not necessarily always be visable.

Awareness: Cervical cancers are not too common- 12000 a year and almost all women get screened pretty regularly with pap smears and exams. For oral cancers, hpv causes about 15-20000 cases a year- this is now getting more apparent adn detections is becoming part of standard testing only now. Specific treatment fro these cancers are in trials.

: Unknown. A woman who has had high risk HPV long enough to develop cervical cancer is most likely not contagious, but could be. If the cervix was removed there would likely be less risk. Condoms  do not provide absolute protection against these strains, and they do not produce genital warts. A male that becomes infected with these HPV strains will often never have symptoms or know.

: Oral HPV is far less common than genital. When present, rarely causes visible symptoms like warts, and almost never causes cancer except in older people (mostly age 50+). Next time you see doctor or dentist, ask her to check for visible abnormalities. If none, no worries. Most important, get the HPV vaccine: it will prevent new infection with the 9 HPV types that cause most health problems.
