Unpredictable: First of all it is unusual to get a first time diagnosis of fibroids at age 50 unless they are very small. They really should not be large and growing at that age. That would slightly increase the risk of cancer. But fibroids may cause no symptoms, or they may cause pain, bleeding, constipation, etc. Depends on number, size and location.

my pelvic us showed a simple cyst on ovary & a 0.9x0.3cm echogenic lobulated mass, likely representing endometrial polyp vs. intracavitary fibroid with trace free fluid. is it possible the polyp is cancerous? my pcp ordered a stat referral gynecology?

: "Fibroids" or polyps are rarely malignant, but may cause intermittent bleeding. A GYN physician can provide guidance, and may recommend surgical removal and biopsy.  A "simple" ovarian cyst, as opposed to a complex one will usually resolve on its own.

can someone interpret this for me? there is only one number for the cyst measurement. would this be the circumference of the cyst? previously identified large midline cystic pelvic mass with low-level internal echoes currently measures 17.2 cm?

: Probably it is round in shape. If irregular or elongated, probably additional dimensions would have been stated.

Schedule follow up: The next step is a visit to your obgyn. Bring a copy of the report that showed the cyst. They will need to review it. If the pain has resolved then another type of imaging to determine what is seen should be considered.  If the pain continues they may consider a diagnostic laparoscopy. They will also want to know if you are sure both ovaries were removed. Sono/ct or MRI may be helpful here.

can ultrasound tell the difference between tumors and other things? could an ultrasound mistake a tumor for a cyst, fibroid or other mass?

Ultrasound : Ultrasound is excellent at characterizing and correctly identifying cysts (a cyst is a fluid filled structure). Most cysts appear obviously benign on ultrasound. There are some tumors that are cystic (specifically cystic ovarian tumors), but these usually do not look the same as benign ovarian cysts or ovarian follicles. If a cystic ovarian tumor is discovered very early (while it is very small), it is usually indistinguishable from a benign cyst. If the cyst is imaged a few months later and has not grown, then it can be considered a benign cyst. A uterine fibroid is a benign tumor of the muscle of the uterus (leiomyoma). It would be unusual to mistake a uterine fibroid for any other mass. A leiomyosarcoma is a cancerous tumor which is indistinguishable from a uterine fibroid, but this cancer is exceedingly rare.

Fibroid: I would suggest following up with specialist that is GYN for further management such as ulttrasound, birth control pills and lab draw for hemoglobin check and also thyroid check as heavy cycles can cause low hemoglobin .

i had a trans vaginal scan 9 months ago would that have picked up any fibroids if i had them? results showed no cysts adenexal mass or free fluid

Fibroids: If you had a transvaginal sonogram and the uterus was normal at that time, it would be very unusual to develop fibroids that are symptomatic now.  Still, a cyst can develop during that time and cause some symptoms.  If you are concerned, you can see your physician and have this evaluated.

was seen by my dr today,am being referred to a specialist she said 5.5cm cyst behind my uterus,fibroid after having a pelvic ultrasound.treatment?

OvarianCyst&amp;Fibroid?: We can not answer without having more information.Do you have any symptoms.Have you had Fibroid uterus for some times and where exactly behind the uterus is the Cyst.Is it in the uterus or the Ovary.
I am sorry but you should wait to see the Gynecologist to find what treatment if any is needed.
