Why not now?: Possibly allergy or sensitivity to the metal - often nickel. Allergy and sensitivity can develop anytime. Cheap earrings are not more infectious than the expensive variety.

You : You very likely have an infection, and given the duration of symptoms and lack of progress, i would reccomend an antibiotic that is considered safe in pregnancy.  Your doctor can review safety in pregnacy studies with you at your visit.  The definitive way to make that diagnosis would be for your doctor to obtain a sample of the discharge and culture it.  You may also be having a reaction to the metal in the post of the earring, so switching metals (higher carat gold is a good choice) may help.  Good luck

You can't: If your ear piercing is infected, you will need to take out the earring.  Additionally, you may need to see a medical professional for oral and topical antibiotics.  Some suggest hibiclens as a surgical scrub, but take care not to get it in your ear as it can have a negative effect on your ear drum.  Another possibility is that you are allergic to the metal in the earring- you may need platinum!

May want evaluation.: You may want to have your ear evaluated by a doctor. If it is not responding to over the counter topical antibiotics like neosporin you may have a complicated infection that may require oral antibiotics. It is also very common to have a allergy to a metal in your earring that may seem like an infection but isn't. This may require something other than an antibiotic like a topical cortisone cream.

Yes: Ear infections don't always clear with one course of antibiotics. He may need to see the pediatrician for an ear recheck to see if the infection cleared.

Remove earrings: If these are infected the best thing to do is remove the earrings and treat the infection along with gentle cleansing of the sites. If it doesn't begin to clear up n a few days then you should see a doctor. It is also possible that you may be allergic to the nickel in the earrings.

Read: Water should not hurt your ear, even if its infected. But if you really want to, soak a cotton ball in mineral oil and place it in the ear.

Crackling ear: Ear infections can include a buildup of fluid behind the eardrum.  See your dr if fluid drains or other symptoms are present or crackling is pronounced. Less commonly considered, the ear's three tiny bones that tap the eardrum to generate sound can become stiff (otosclerosis) -- miniature arthritis -- that can contribute to hearing loss.
