Im 53 years old and just recently have the problem of infected ear lobes with the use of "cheap" earrings...meaning not 14 carat god. why now?

Why not now?: Possibly allergy or sensitivity to the metal - often nickel. Allergy and sensitivity can develop anytime. Cheap earrings are not more infectious than the expensive variety.
