Great tool: Meditation has been shown to decrease pain even with a short amount of training.  A recent study describes four, 20 minute instructions resulted in reduced activation in areas of the brain associated with emotional responses to pain (functional mri) there was a self reported decrease in pain as well. Close your eyes, focus on breathing, let go any distractions w/o judgement & gently refocus&breath.

Sit quietly: Start by sitting quietly, many find its easier with soft music playing. Close your eyes, observe your thoughts. You can imagine that all your thoughts are like clouds in the sky, just let them go by and don't hang on to any of them.
Spend 7-30 minutes a day doing this. It will begin to quiet your mind.

Mindfulness: You are already on a good path for wanting to control negative thoughts. You do not to accept your thoughts if you don't agree with them.  Try to challenge the thought as if you don't believe it, for ex. Try to replace it with a plausible positive thought. I would recommend books on mindfulness training and cbt. Also, basic eastern philosophy teachings help understand sources of negative thinking.

There are many diffe: . Spend 20 minutes in a quiet area where you are likely to be undisturbed. If lunch time works for you or any other time during the day that is fine. Using a focus on your breath, a  favorite mantra(word or sound) or anything that you are comfortable with is a good start. When thoughts come up, gently return to your breath, mantra or your desired area of focus.

Training: Jon kabat zinn's book "wherever you go there you are" is a great book on mindfulness meditation. Look for meditation trainers in your area as you may benefit from someone trained to give you tips.

Find a mentor: Regular practice will help. Find a good hynotherapist or biofeedback teacher to help. Also the homeopathic remedy argentum nitricum (preferably in a 200 (pyrethins and piperonyl butoxide) c potency...(your health food store can order it for you) will also help with  anxiety in general and needle phobia in particular.
