is it unusual for tmj to take two to three years to heal  and go through lots of different symptoms. is it bad to have it this long?

Accepted Answer

May not be healing: Acute tmd will often resolve if the causes for it are addressed. If the causes persist, however, it can become chronic and persistent. You will need an evaluation along with some imaging to figure out the state of your joint(s). Once chronic it may require a more aggressive intervention. Good luck!

Not sure: Do not know what TN stands for other than Tennessee.  Do not know of any "healing recipe," salve, emollient, snake oil, pill or potion that will resolve dysfunction of the temporo-mandibular joint.  I would like to learn of any new or valuable treatments, especially if supported by well founded research.

It depends: Are you having surgery?  The tm joint is a very complex joint.  Typically, if you are having surgery, the joint will not heal out of place.  You may have a slight alteration in your bite afterwards that could be permanent, but this depends on your individual situation.

Hopefully: That's the outcome the surgeon is looking for but doing surgery on the TMJ should be a last resort because sometimes it makes the problem worse.

BOTOX and spasm: I use it cosmetically, but it is known that although Botox wears off, there can be some decline in muscles of the face causing hyperdynamic wrinkles with repeated use over years. So, although it may not translate specifically to your situation, you may see some improvement in the long term with TMJ spasms. You would still probably need multiple treatments for longterm success.

Accepted Answer

Possibly weeks: Tmd exacerbations can last weeks depending on the problem.  Nsaid's usually help if used on a regular basis for the inflammation.  If there is disc displacement, soft diet , muscle relaxants, or splints can be used.  If no relief then surgical procedures maybe necessary.  Se a board certified oral surgeon for a consult.

i have tmj problem for 1 year, my dentist said its because of my wisdom teeth. i just had it extracted, will it help to heal my tmj?

TMJ: If that was the cause of your TMJ syndrome. then yes; time will tell.

tmj 2 years.improving - pt/night guard( 4  wks)but still weird feeling in ear when chew. never confirmed a displaced tmj dic but if it is will it heal?

Bite: Most likely you have an interference in your bite that needs to be adjusted at the dentist.  At the dentist you could chew the articulating paper we use and find the spot that causes the ear feeling,  if the dentist adjusts your tooth on that exact spot you will immediately not have that feeling in your ear. It is quite amazing, how quickly we can cause or improve the ear irregularies.

my orthodontist wants me to take mobic (meloxicam) for 30 days to help heal my tmj. along with splint therapy. any opinion on if this will help. is mobic (meloxicam) ok?

Without: Without examining you there is no way to diagnose your problem.  The treatment plan you describe is not unusual.  As with any medication, just make sure it will not adversely interact with other Meds that you may be taking.
