Bite: Most likely you have an interference in your bite that needs to be adjusted at the dentist. At the dentist you could chew the articulating paper we use and find the spot that causes the ear feeling, if the dentist adjusts your tooth on that exact spot you will immediately not have that feeling in your ear. It is quite amazing, how quickly we can cause or improve the ear irregularies.

Disc: Tmj issues usually are due to muscle and ligament tension due to grinding or clenching or bite issues. Sometimes there is actual damage to the joint or disc. See a TMJ specialist for evaluation and x ray. Displaced discs may need to be addressed versus healing on their own as well as treating the cause.

Complex question: Many TMJ problems continue to improve over time with or without treatment. If you're not as good as you want to be, see a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
