i'm wondering if i get surgery on both feet, how am i supposed to get around?

Depends on: The type of surgery and the needed post op care. 

Some conditions do not require non weight bearing status. In those cases , crutches can reduce the load and givve balance while healing. 

Other surgeries may require no weight bearing and only one leg should be done at a time.

Bunion surgery: Pain at 6 months can occur but x rays should be performed to assess bony healing. There are so many different types of bunionectomies that from this vantage point it is difficult to say for sure if pain at 6 months is normal or not.

Pain that : Doesn't go away. Fracture of the bone that is painful and doesn't heal conservatively.

Surgery: That will depend o how much dissection will be needed to excise the bone.  Generally this involves soft tissue dissection with skin healing in 10-14 days   further recovery will be dependent on your participation in your care, .

i have hammertoes on both feet.  i don't think that they are rigid because i can move them.  is there anything that i can do besides surgery?

Flexible Hammertoes: If they are flexible and painless, there is no need for treatment. Just wear well supportive footwear with enough room in the toe-box area of the shoe for the toes.

displaced 5th metatarsal neck on both feet, dr didn't perform surgery waiting for 6 weeks and if still displaced will perform, is this normal?

Not really...: It's a bit of a variance on that call.  There is always a risk of doing surgery; however, with a displaced 5th metatarsal neck, there is more of a risk of not fixating it initially because of the location of the fracture as well as the immobilization.  Unless there's some contraindication for the patient to undergo surgery because of another medical condition, i don't understand why it wasn't done.

I would recommend: a thorough assessment by a podiatrist to find out all of your treatment options.

Accepted Answer

Variety of options: If the bunions are painful, then you can do physical therapy.  Otherwise, change in shoes (no high heels, pointy toe shoes), orthotics.  There is no way to get rid of bunions without surgical intervention.

i have overlapping pinky toes on both feet since i was born. i am now 33 and they cause me pain and i'm always tripping. is it worth getting surgery?

Maybe: That's a question that you have to answer for yourself. If the problem is giving you lifestyle altering problems, then have it done!  it will never get better on it's own, and if it's that great of a problem at 33 years old... Maybe you should.  See a podiatrist for options.
