Thistle w/fat liver: Per research  milk thistle  can help in some hepatitis.  Treatment  of  fatty liver consists of lifestyle modification ; weight loss . exercise vaccination against hep B and A  and avoidance of other liver toxins/drugs.  Check LFTs pre &amp;  at 1 month. f/u w/doc

No: Milk thistle has not been shown to help in fatty liver. If fatty liver is caused by obesity, diabetes, or high triglycerides, then improvment can occur with weight loss, blood sugar control, and lowering triglyceride levels. Vitamin e 400 units twice a day may be helpful in patients with fatty liver and elevated liver enzmes in the blood.

Doubtful: According to nih, "previous laboratory studies suggested that milk thistle may benefit the liver by protecting & promoting the growth of liver cells, fighting oxidation (a chemical process that can damage cells), & inhibiting inflammation. However, results from small clinical trials of milk thistle for liver diseases have been mixed, & two rigorously designed studies found no benefit.".

Weight loss...: Fatty liver disease is most often a consequence of the foods we eat and being overweight.  There is no specific treatment (drug or supplement) effective for reversing fatty liver.  If your bmi is > 24, losing weight will result in improvement in ast/alt and reduction of fat in the liver.  Certainly elimination of alcohol (if you drink) is recommended.  Stop the milk thistle.  Good luck!

Maybe: Milk thistle is the herb most used for liver disease but we do not have good studies in this country looking at its safety and effectiveness. There was a recent study showing that even vitamins didn't necessarily contain the vitamins listed on the lable. Your weight and diet could be responsible for the improvement but the milk thistle could have helped too. Whatever, it seems to have worked for u

Cirrhosis unlikely: Glad you're not drinking. Milk thistle protects from toxicity of some chemotherapeutic agents but I am not aware of any good work to suggest it helps common non-alcoholic fatty liver. I am going to assume you do not have hepatitis C or any other serious illness. Your best help is sensible eating and being physically fit.

Yes but . . .: Any thing you take will affect you. Question is whether effect is good or bad. Dietary supplements such as milk thistle & fish oil are not regulated by government. As such, there may be some contaminants in there that can be bad for you. That's because there's no regulation that manufacturers prove effectiveness or safety prior to marketing. However, milk thistle is said to be good for liver.

Unknown: as to whether they are effective. There are studies on both sides of this issue, and the majority of studies have not shown efficacy of either medication in preventing the progression or promoting the improvement of liver inflammation.  This is particularly true with vitamin E, where all studies have shown lack of efficacy. A few studies of milk thistle have shown small improvements, but most not.

i have been diagnosis and got fatty liver. my alt(sgpt) is 92, lipid & glucose e okay! which is quiet high level. what will i do now? dr prescribed these medicines: viusid, epaset, milk thistle & urcodil 300mg. are these medicine okay?

Metformin 2 g/day: Viusid, Epaset, and Milk Thistle are nutritional supplements without strong evidence for benefit.  Before going to urcodil, ask your MD whether Metformin 2 g/day would be a good choice for an initial drug treatment.
