Doubtful: According to nih, "previous laboratory studies suggested that milk thistle may benefit the liver by protecting & promoting the growth of liver cells, fighting oxidation (a chemical process that can damage cells), & inhibiting inflammation. However, results from small clinical trials of milk thistle for liver diseases have been mixed, & two rigorously designed studies found no benefit.".

Possibly: There have been studies demonstrating benefit of milk thistle in a variety of liver problems, possibly in part due to increasing the concentration of glutathione in the liver. Glutathione is used to neutralize toxins.

Milk Thistle: Milk thistle is used all over the world as a cleanser for liver damage or liver strain. But, recent scientific studies call into question if there is any real benefit. What we do know is that there is no harm in using it.
