: Everyone is different. There is no set time table. Depends on the original cause for the COPD, and whether someone continues to be exposed to the toxic trigger (i.e. tobacco)

for the past 3 years my monocyte levels have increased 2018 .660, 2019 .750, 2020, .880 which is over, i have generalized itching ussually everyday, maybe takes a couple days off, have type 2 diabetes , and mild copd, worried about leukemia?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the data is not suggestive of leukemia.

5 years ago i underwent a vats pleurodesis on my left lung after a ruptured bullea from copd caused a pneumothorax, can i take a long haul flight?

Prior to travel,: I would suggest a chest radiograph to document complete resolution of the pneumothorax seven days prior to travel . The VATS procedure does lower your risk of another pneumothorax in that area, but your underlying bullae associated with your COPD  should be checked prior to air travel.
A pulmonary function test may also be ordered by your respiratory specialist.

i'm a 74 year old male, i have chronic sleep apnea, heart disease, diabetes,copd,arthritis, fibromyalgia. i was just prescribed lyrica 50 mg. how safe is it for me to take?

: It has to do with goals for your therapy, all the other meds you are taking, previous response to other drugs/ allergies. Make sure you report to your prescriber in case undesired effects, Lyrica is not going to cure any of your condition, it is intended to give you relief from your symptoms.

There : There is always help if you are ready to receive it, internalize it, and act on it. Due to your multiple problems you will need a multi-disciplinary approach. Start by following up with all your doctors and following their recommendations.
The key here i believe is for you to seek counseling. Dealing with so many issues is very difficult and can take a toll on your mental well being and your ability to cope and deal with what may seem to be an overwhelming or hopeless situation, and to ultimately accept all possible outcomes, good or bad. 
In addition you need to be screened for depression and treated accordingly.

Highly unlikely: Unless your lungs are very sensitive to the harmful effects of cigarette smoke, it is quite unlikely to develop COPD after 2 years of smoking. 

That said, i would quit smoking even if you have been smoking for 2 hours. It is harmful, dangerous, and causes a whole host of health problems. 

And...It is expensive.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Other causes of COPD exist though cigarette smoking and exposure are most common. Air pollution, work exposure to toxins and several other diseases like alpha 1 anti trypsin deficiency can also cause COPD in non smokers. Childhood health, asthma history and even possibly dietary factors appear to have some influence of getting it. Work with pulmonary specialist if you are concerned.

See your doc/ tests: Can't tell without a good exam and maybe some pulmonary function tests. The good news is - if you quit now, in 10 years your lungs are generally considered "back to normal". Please try to cut back and/or quit... It will only be harder later if you go nothing now. Good luck!

COPD: COPD while commonly associated with smoking can develop for several other reasons mostly due to genetic conditions, long term exposure to other lung damaging processes in mining or construction. There is also damage caused by second hand smoke.

what to do if i have this ongoing cough for a couple years and ive only smoked for four yeara could i be developing copd?

Need diagnosis...: In order to determine if you have COPD, you would need to have pulmonary function tests done. If it shows chronic obstruction, then you most likely have COPD. You need to quit smoking ASAP since you are at high risk of developing COPD the longer you smoke. COPD is a progressive disease and progression slows down if you quit smoking. Your doc can help you quit so see your doctor ASAP!
